The Future of Meliora Drents (2026+)

At the time of this writing, Iris has been retired from breeding. After three attempts in two years, resulting in two no-takes and a (very special!) singleton, Iris has been through enough for us. And with a soon-to-be mobile human child and professional careers taking off, we believe we would not be able to raise a litter with the attention we strive to in the near term.

So what does the future look like for Meliora Drents? As of now, Iris is the only Drent in our home, and we don’t have immediate plans to add another. We aren’t done breeding forever, but, I’m sad to say, it will likely be several years before we come back to it.

That said, Meliora Drents was never just a breeding program. It encompasses all of our breed ambassadorship, community engagement, and performance work. It’s time to turn our attention back to some big goals, as well as continuing to support others wherever they are in their journeys, and continuing our volunteer work with the American Drentsche Patrijshond Association.

So while we won’t have the puppy content to share that we hoped, stay tuned for scent work, rally/obedience, fieldwork, breed education, and more!

If you are looking for a Drent puppy to start your adventure with, I am always happy to refer folks to other trusted breeders in our network. A great place to start is the ADPA member-breeder and current/planned litter pages. If you’d like a third-party opinion on what breeder or pairing may be best for you, or would like help finding a Drent to meet in person, or just want to chat any/all things Drent, I am more than happy to help.

While our future as a breeder is likely a few years off, if you’d like to stay in touch or hear the latest on our loose plans, please feel free to get in touch.
