This story was originally published in the American Drentsche Patrijshond Association Summer 2025 Newsletter, and a Dutch-translated version in the Vereniging de Drentsche Patrijshond magazine “Onze Drent” in Fall 2025. In the United States there are an estimated 120-150 living Drentsche Patrijshonden. The population is small, but growing. We have a dedicated community of Drent

I have been horribly delinquent on keeping the blog updated with our Scent Work trials of 2024, but fear not, we have certainly been busy with them!

I ended up with an extra Embark test laying around (long story), so I decided to send in Iris’s saliva for DNA testing. I wasn’t expecting to be surprised, but was curious to learn about Iris’s genetic CoI, and thought perhaps her information could contribute to any future studies on genetic markers in Drentsche Patrijshonden

Over the past six months, we have been working with a fantastic group of Drentsche Patrijshond enthusiasts to establish the American Drentsche Patrijshond Association (ADPA), and it’s finally live!

A LONG overdue post on our last Scent Work trial of 2023, where Iris wrapped up an already incredible year with an absolute BANG, earning 6 Master-level qualifying scores, all of which were top-10 and 3 of which were top-4 placements, and most notably, a Master High-In-Trial award!!

Huge news for the Drentsche Patrijshond – the report commissioned by three European Drent clubs (VDPH, DPHCN, and SDPK) from Dr. Pieter Oliehoek of Dogs Global, a leading expert in genetic management of rare breeds, is now available to the public.

Iris finishes off her Scentwork Excellent Overall title and gets her first two qualifying scores at the Master level!

We recently completed Iris’s final health test – an eye examination – shortly after the Drentsche Patrijshond was added to the OFA’s Canine Health Information Center. Let’s talk about what these things are for and what they mean! (Photo is Iris’s silly dilated pupils shortly after the eye exam)

Normal BMBT test results for Iris – but why do this test at all?
